Change default mail address to Hotmail

New Member
I have IE8, Windows Vista and Windows Mail, which shows as my default mail and only email address.
I would like to have my Hotmail address as my default mail, but Windows Mail will not allow me to add Hotmail. Wizard error says it does not support HTTP and I cannot see anywhere under Hotmail options/more options where it allows me to change any type of connections to POP3.
I read it can be done in G-Mail, but unfortunately I have Hotmail.

Is downloading "Windows Live" and uninstalling my "Windows Mail" a solution?
I have all my mail forwarded to Hotmail, so I wouldn't lose saved messages.

You don't need to (nor would it be would it be wise) to remove windows mail, just stop using it. If you use Windows Live mail which you can download from Essentials - Windows Live you will be able to setup your hotmail account straight away once it is installed.

You CAN set up hotmail in Windows Mail and as your default account. The settings are:

POP: pop3.live.com Port 995
SMTP: smtp.live.com Port 25
Use: SSL security

The trick (big trick) is when you set it up, use a fake email address for the initial setup, then once you have it setup, go back in and change your email address in the setup section to your correct hotmail address. Then, and only then, select it as default.

I've been using it a long time in Windows Mail, Thunderbird and Seamonkey.

I do have Windows Live already, so to have it show as my default rather than Windows Mail would I just go into Windows Mail/tools/accounts and remove?

Thanks I will try this too, my problem was I couldn't figure out how to get to the point of being able to select POP etc.
How does one "go back in"? And if I tried to change it to my correct hotmail address, wouldn't it tell me that address is already in use?
If you could give me a sort of step by step for dummies..or computer challenged!
Much appreciated.

I changed the incoming mail port from 110 to 995 under the advanced tab, and the outgoing port was already set at 25. During the first part of the set up it would not allow me to add the .com after hotmail, said it no longer supported HTTP webmail. So I did the address without .com until the second page when it asked for my full e-mail address.
All looked fine after "send"... then I got the following error msg.:


An unknown error has occurred. Subject 'Wanted: Vacation Rental', Account: 'pop3.live.com', Server: 'smtp.live.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '421 Cannot connect to SMTP server 65.55.172.254 (65.55.172.254:25), connect error 10060', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 421, Error Number: 0x800CCC67

a: keep trying until Windows Mail works or

b: setup Windows Live Mail and use that instead

If you choose a, make sure SSL is enabled on outgoing connections under advanced settings and see what happens.

If you choose b, (which I would personally pick) you just have to type in your hotmail username and password when WLM first starts up and hey presto you're done.

It WAS me....on the 2nd. page of instructions I missed re-place "587" in place of the "25" for outgoing server (SMTP). Hotmail now works as my default mailer!

Sorry, I really did try to not ask!
But if you mean literally "mark as solved" I read and also did a "search" of the forum rules for "solved" and cannot figure out how one marks a thread as solved.

Temporary headache, all my hotmail mail decided to re-route from inbox to deleted....hope that is not a regular occurence and just a one time glitch.

I think that may just be one of these things that happens when you first setup a new account, hopefully it won't happen again.

Just to let you know how you mark threads as solved on this forum as well as the uses of the other buttons.

To the top right of this post you will see 3 icons. An orange (+), a set of scales and a red and white warning triangle.

The orange (+) or blue (-) denotes whether a user is on or offline (orange = on, blue = off)

The scales are used to give rep points; click this button if someone has helped you significantly or solved your queries (only give this to posts that you think really deserve it).

The red and white warning triangle is used to denote either an abusive post OR to mark a thread as solved (just put solved in the box that comes up and the admins or moderators will mark it solved).

You can mak the thread as solved by clicking on the right icon at the top right of your screen and typing solved. If you think that you were given information that helped clicking on middle icon to give thanks is always appreciated.
