I have a problem in receiving e-mail,using either Windows Mail,Opera or Thunderbird.I can receive mail sent by local users(just a few miles away)but anything else cannot be received.I have no problem in receiving all mail using Virgin Web Mail.I am assuming that I must be using the correct configuration,otherwise how can I be receiving any mail at all?Oddly,the local mail I am receiving is all sent by home users,whereas the missing mail all appears to be from commercial organisations-is this significant?

Put the mail, that you expect, but never arrives on the safe list.
Tools>securitye>safelist.
The security setting is blocking the missing mail.

Thanks for your comments.Are you saying that it is possible to alter the security setting?I've had a look at this,and the security setting would only appear to regulate the amount of junk e-mails,presumably putting such mail in the junk folder-but this is not happening,as my junk folder remains empty!Regarding putting mail on the safe-list,do you mean that I have to read the mail on my web-mail account,and then enter each sender's name onto the safe-list?I cannot really believe that even Microsoft would produce such a useless system!

The safe list is used for mail that you receive on a regular basis, and want to be sure that it gets to your inbox. How many commercial emails can you receive? Just list them all in the safe list and then forget about it.
Your security setting are set in such a way as to limit the mail that you receive.
Go to tools > safety options and check both the blocked senders and security tab. Set security to allow more and see what happens.

If you received a few it seems that the situation is caused by Windows Mail. Try this, put the email that has not been received on the safe list, lets see if they get through.
Also, turn off your A/V, possibly that is the source of the problem. Remember, if it is, the reason the A/V feels that this mail represents a virus threat; shut off your firewall.

Thanks for your latest message.I have disabled my AV e-mail scanner,also stopped my firewall,but neither of these measures has had any effect.Basically,it means that any e-mail programme I've tried has shown the same unreliability,i.e.allowing some e-mails,and not others,with no particular pattern.I'm now beginning to suspect my ISP(Virginmedia)of being in some way responsible,in an effort to make me use their own web-mail programme!A friend of mine who also runs Vista 32,has no problems-the only difference being that he uses a different ISP!

May not be a problem with the ISP, but possibly a feature. Some ISP, block mail from known spam sources.
