Windows Mail: How to copy export to a removable medium?

Fairly new ot Vista and after extensive googling I see that Windows Mail's export only works to the local hard drive (heaven knows why). Evereything works fine up to that point. Then the last step - copying the export from the hard drive to a removable medium fails. Eg I put the export into a folder on the desktop, but it won't copy to a USB flash stick: it gets started and then hangs - suddenly saying it will take 20+ hours to complete. There is no conceivable space issue. How can I do this last step, which is the key step? Have MS put in a spoiler?

I've been wrestling with this for days. Help! Please!

Thank you Shawn. I used the tutorial you refer to and I followed it precisely. I got to Stage 9 - the final stage - without the slightest difficulty. However the results are not copyable. I have tried various subsets of my messages but none of the exports will copy - neither to CD/DVD nor flash stick. It is apparent from googlings that this is a fairly common problem, but I have found no solutions. I notice that the tutorial is about a year old. I imagine that Microsoft have plugged this leak by putting some logic in the copy software to detect mail messages, or the .fol files, and then to cripple the copy process. That is all too plausible since the tutorial was written to overcome the restriction that Windows Mail cannot export to an exchangeable medium directly! - in itself indicating a desire by MS to hinder exporting mail to other machines. Do you have any other relevangt references please? Thanks.

Strange, while you cannot export directly to a USB key, you should be able to the desktop and copy it from there to the USB key. Do you have any type of security program (ex: antivirus) that may be preventing it from being copied?

Do you have any issues with copying other larger files to the USB key?

I have just discovered that I can copy my exported messages (which were exported in Windows Mail format) to a network drive on my old XP machine (which has Outlook Express installed). However all the .eml's at the source turn up at the destination as .dbx's!! So I guess that rules out any AV issues on the source (Vista) machine. It does seem to show though that the copy software does have email-specific logic in it. The flash stick is 16GB and I've had no issues copying big files to it. Any further ideas please?

Can you export the message folder to your desktop, place it in a ZIP file, and copy it that way to the USB or network drive as a backup? If so, you can then just copy the ZIP file in the new installation of Vista later, extract the exported message folder, and import it back in.

Thank you. Why on earth didn't I think of that! In fact we now have 2.5 methods of getting the export off the Vista machine.

1. Using Winzip.

2. When I pulled the export file from the Vista machine by running the copy on the XP machine it worked fine. The .eml's stayed as .eml's on arrival.

3. The half method. When I push the export file from the Vista machine by running the copy on the Vista machine the stuff arrives but the copy has converted the .eml's into .dbx's.

Once on the XP machine it's then plain sailing.

Thank you helping me put things straight. Now I can sleep at nights...
