NEWBIE: Copy & download issues vista 64

Not sure if I posted this thread in the right forum...hope so! Just signed on to this forum....probably will need lots of help with vista 64...

Just purchased a vista 64 (HP) laptop and have been moving files and installing programs from a near-dead desktop.

Have been struggling copying and downloading files from either other computers on my network and from the internet. Have been unable to copy/download anything from the internet.

Running Firefox.

Have no problems downloading same files on a desktop running xp pro, so it's got to be something with vista.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure as to what the problem could be, my suggestion would be the long way to save and move files and programs. This is a sure fire way, burn to cd/dvd and then install on new machine. This way you'll have backups for future needs. Like I said it's the long way but will work.

Are you hooking up the laptop wired or wirelessly to the network. If wireless make sure your connected to your network and not your neighbors unprotected network or something like that. That happens a lot more then you think.
