Firefox 3.0 "Assertion Failed" when trying to download files

Hello!
Lately whenever I try to download any file from anywhere I get the following "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library" error:

Assertion Failed!

Program: C:\Windows\SysWOW64\verclsid.ex
File: D:\rtm\ds\securityproducts\antim...\dynami...ues.cpp
Line: 979

Expression: false

The thought just occurred to me that there might be conflicting mozilla settings, since I'm using a hard drive (d:) that previously had mozilla on it, but I didn't remove the data.

I'll try and erase that old stuff, but in the meantime, if anyone has ideas or suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

I deleted everything (mozilla related) off that hard drive (d:) and that didn't solve the problem.

Can you detail what you mean by 1) deleted everything (Mozilla related) off that drive, and 2) using a HD ( D: ) that had Mozilla on it? Mozilla suite (now called SeaMonkey), Mozilla Thunderbird, Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Sunbird, Mozilla Instantbird, Mozilla XULRunner....

OK, I know you meant Firefox - but please call it Firefox so as to not cause confusion later on, both for us answering posts as well as future readers.

Also, try not to go doing things like "deleting" thing off your HD without getting some verification that what you are doing is going to help or not help. The error message shows obviously that the problem is with a file in your SysWOW64 directory, which should not be used by Firefox at all....at least, not in the installation process. So, that would indicate that it might be a good time to perform some virus and malware checks.

Yeah, I apologize for the confusion. I meant "Firefox 3.0." I deleted any associated firefox files off of my 2nd hard drive (d). D was the hard drive from the first computer I built, and so when I built this one in May, I just took the hard drive as it was (so I could eventually take off what I needed and pick up where I left off...if that makes sense).

Today I've been able to download the files, but then AVG scans it for viruses and if I click "exit" on the Firefox Download box immediately, I can get the file, but then about 30 seconds later the box shows up with the assertion error.

I know it's not any virus or malware because I just reinstalled Vista last night. I'm thinking it might be the build I'm using. I got it off Microsoft's Technet, and I still am working with someone from India to get Ultimate Dreamscenes to download or even show up as an Ultimate Extra. So far, they're not getting anywhere.

Sounds like I am having the exact same problems as you!

Same error as you but in IE instead of Firefox. Also refers to D: instead of C: (D: is my DVD-RW drive).

No Ultimate Extras visible either...

Can you please let me know how you get on? I will post up anything I find.

Yes the same error, right down to the line 979... I will try to post a screenshot when I have a chance. But I think we can rule out FireFox as the cause.

Hmmm - so this problem is not with a particular browser, but with a particular Vista build instead? Frustrated, was yours a pre-SP1 or an integrated SP1 disc? How about you Alastair?

That might be something to look at - if the MSDN with integrated SP1 are simply being stupid because of the manual integration factor....

So it turns out, most of my problems were from Microsoft Technet's Vista Ultimate checked/debug build w/SP1.

Instead of installing with that disk, I borrowed my friends Vista Ultimate disk and used that to install Vista. Used the product key I got from Technet, and everything seems to work now. I haven't done the extensive testing yet, but Windows Update, Dreamscenes, Defender, Windows Media Center - they all seem to work properly now.

If Alastair also ceases to have issues, then I suggest that the both of you need to contact M$ and let them know the problem. Perhaps cruising the TechNet help forums may help also....

Actually, I think the root of 95% of my problems were caused by the .iso I got from Microsoft Technet. I used the Vista Ultimate w/SP1 Checked/Debug build from March 2008.

Last week I decided to try my friends copy of Vista Ultimate and use my product key, and so far Windows Update, Windows Media Center, Windows Defender, Dreamscenes, and everything else I was having problems with is now working. I haven't really used IE since the fresh installation, but hopefully that's mostly fixed, too.

I had been working with Support from Microsoft and I told them the situation, so Microsoft is aware (or should be) that their .iso they have posted on their Technet website is problematic.

I posted my problems with the .iso from technet on the Technet forums, but so far, it's only received 9 views. A moderator did post a reply saying that they forwarded the feedback to others to do some checking...
